The password is the key part of that, when creating a password it can be very tempting to put your date of birth and your dog’s name, however this can easily be discovered by someone else.

When making a password it is a good idea to limit personal data inside it and ensure it has a good length and a mixture of numbers, letters and symbols.

We believe passwords are so important we have a separate page here: Password Generator – ComputerBits (cbits.co.uk) which is a more detailed dive into passwords as well as a password generator to create a memorable password for you.

Now on to the first thing you will need is a password for the device you are reading this on. If this is a Windows laptop or desktop you may log in with a PIN or password. At a glance PINS and passwords may seem like they are the same thing but they each serve different purposes.

PINS are great for local devices as they are, straightforward to remember, very convenient and while they are not as secure as a password, PINS are only used locally (someone has to have the device in their hands and know the PIN) and even then the device will lock after too many attempts. Pins can be set up on most devices. You more than likely already have one for your mobile phone however we will happily help you set one up on your laptop or desktop just contact us on 0330 159 3832 or come visit us.

Passwords on the other hand can be used anywhere, on any device, in any location, so need to be more secure, much longer and more complex. Passwords allow you to log into your account on a different device (eg a friends laptop), or use online services.

Now that you have a PIN for your device you will want to have it sync all your data with your other devices (such as your phone or tablet). If you own a Windows or Android device this should be through OneDrive, or perhaps Google Drive, there are other options like Dropbox and Apple users often use iCloud.

Having all your data stored in the cloud is great when you want to access any file, on any device, and anywhere with just an internet connection. All the options above have a basic plan which is free to use all you need is an account with the relevant provider which can be set up using your email address (and a SECURE password!)

The added bonus of setting up a Microsoft or Google account is that you can have your browser sync between devices and use the basic password manager built in however we will go over password managers in a later blog post.

It is undeniable that we each have more online accounts than we can count, Facebook, email, online banking, Amazon, Tesco, and many more accounts all of which need at the very least, a username and a password.
