I am using the program “Calibre”<\/a> created by Kovid Goyal as a “central bookcase” for all my books, which are from now on going to be purchased as “e-books”, and am gradually trying to replace my “back catalogue” (The paper books I have in overflowing bookcases at home!) with digital copies.<\/h3>\n

I have Calibre setup at work running on my Desktop PC, but the library itself is stored on a Netgear NAS (our business unit! – my QNap is awaiting larger Disks) I am not happy about giving the access to my PC at work that this necessitates but until Calibre can be run safely on a NAS it has to be that way<\/a>. (our Nas units are all set to simply “mirror”, (2 Disks) the work data is copied to USB drive for Backup, and the Data, (Movies \/ Music) on my QNap is all duplicated onto a D-Link NAS at home)<\/p>\n

Calibre has the Apprentice Alf <\/a>Plugins installed – for the reasons explained by “Alf” – (You can get the plugins here<\/strong><\/em><\/a> too). This allows us to convert books to whatever format we like, download to the device of choice, my daughter likes to use Google books on her Nexus, I use Pageturner\u00a0<\/a>on Android Tablet and have it on my phone (Not that I read on the phone), and I run it under Bluestacks Android emulator on my Laptop. This allowed me, for instance to buy a book from Amazon on day of release, install it into Calibre, so my daughter could read it with google books (Google did not have the book available on the day!) This may be breaking DRM rules, but hey, we are buying the book, putting it on the Bookshelf (the physical ones at home are overflowing anyway!), taking it with us when we go out (without the risk of losing\/damaging it), so what’s different about that to hardcopy?<\/p>\n

The first advantage I find with e-readers is that you can use them on a tablet at night, without complaints from partners about lights being on. Of course reading in the bath\/pool is much more damaging if you drop it!<\/p>\n

But beyond this, there is the saving in roomspace for storing of books, the portability, (one 7″ tablet to take on holiday not half-a-dozen books). Two of us can download the book onto our various devices and read it at the same time (I’m not sure how copyright looks at this but a hardback can be taken off the bookshelf and read by anyone who has access – though not at the same time!) there is also the “size” factor that you can view a cookbook or Instruction Manual on your 20″plus PC Monitor, whilst a novel is better on a tablet, and a smartphone is good to check notes and references.<\/p>\n

Finally though I have it setup so I can login from anywhere (given internet of course!) and download any of my books etc onto the “device of the moment” if I so need, really great if you need to consult a manual in Malaga or a newspaper in Nepal!<\/p>\n
