Windows 10 “Free Upgrade” We repeat Our Advice: Stop and Think!

Windows 10 - very unhappy

Windows 10 has been released to over 150 countries across the world just less than 4 weeks ago. Although this upgrade is free to most Windows users (those running Windows 7 or 8.1), we don’t think the upgrade is worth doing at this point – leave the testing to the testers, we say.

Today, we had a customer who attempted to upgrade to Windows 10 on his laptop and it failed spectacularily! Along with it, the upgrade process and automatic recovery dragged his files into the ether. Unfortunately, we were unable to rescue these files even with our low level recovery tools.

This is not only the windows system files but ALL his data and even the Recovery hidden drive.

We do not agree with the way a “change of operating system” is being marketed as an upgrade, in the same way you might update a phone app, it is a major change that needs thought and planning not a simple “click upgrade now”

Microsoft you are discrediting yourselves and your products

Windows 10 itself is definitely worth having for windows 8 & 8.1 Users, (it is a small improvement!), but people who like and are used to Windows 7 need to really think it through don’t forget you have 11 months left to upgrade for Free (29/07/2016). If you’d still like to go through with the upgrade, come in to the store and  discuss your options, we can back up your data for you, or give you a demonstration of what Windows 10 is like and what it means for you.

If you’d like to have a go on your own, we would really recommend backing up everything you value and/or couldn’t live without before you upgrade!
