Today I selected “Market” on my Android phone, as I am expecting an update to IP Camviewer an “app” we use to remotely check cameras like the one shown on our Website, instead of being taken to the Android Market(place) I am confronted by a screen inviting me to accept or decline “Google Play”, no other options and no explanation what on earth “Google Play” is or why I might want it.

 

I am already involved in issues over Android Market place which means that it is very difficult to administer my ”apps” not only does the market keep ramming updates for apps I have removed (or want to ), but separately 3 Google books have entered my account and Google are telling me I cannot remove them, apparently they came free with Google books (which I don’t have either!)

 

Now they have changed to Google Play

 

I am insulted, I don’t use my phone for “playing” (yes I do have some music on it and a link to my Music library!) other that that I have apps relating to business, plus unfortunately a whole load of what I consider useless Junk put on by HTC and Three, (which cannot be uninstalled unless you “root” the phone – Android equivalent of Apple’s Jailbreaking ). This lot is already making the phone continually grumble about insufficient memory, so I am debating its real value.

 

Google Play means I can have Movies, Music, Games, Books (oh yes and my applications) offered to me and all stored (recorded) in my account. I’m using a PHONE with a screen smaller than 4” diagonal for goodness sake, I’m not saying there aren’t some looneytunes out there who want to watch Avatar in 3D on such a screen rather that working, but don’t count me with them, I’d rather get some sleep.

 

Terry has recently defected to what I always considered “The Dark Side” by buying an Ipad, but looking at the Apple Apps store, (You can simply select “hide” for apps you no longer want – not ideal BUT way superior to Google) makes me think that Google may be becoming part of a new “Axis of Evil Empire” and we need a new rebellion to find a “fourth way” (if that’s not mixing too many metaphors!)

 

Sufficient to say I selected “Decline” on my phone, am now contacting my “app” providers to arrange service outside of “Play”

I have held off purchase of Tablets, waiting for proper Android based ones that come anywhere near the iPad, and our phones come up for renewal shortly. At present this would make me decide to go to Apple (We’ve just loaded a beta of Windows 8 for PC which has made me even more certain I don’t want a Windows phone – that’s another story!)

 

I really don’t believe I’m advocating Apple… I’ll be supporting Mahmoud I’m a Dinner Jacket next ! Google where have you driven me??
